Dr. Theodore Ruel Named IMPAACT Network Vice Chair
The IMPAACT Scientific Leadership Group (SLG) is pleased to announce the selection of Dr. Theodore Ruel as IMPAACT Network Vice Chair Elect. Dr. Ruel will join Dr. Sharon Nachman and Dr. Jennifer Jao (Network Co-Chairs) to lead IMPAACT’s mission to improve health outcomes among infants, children, adolescents, and pregnant and postpartum women impacted by or living with HIV, tuberculosis, and other related conditions. Dr. Ruel’s appointment follows the solicitation for Network Vice Chair applications broadly distributed on 10 August 2026.
"I'm honored to join IMPAACT's leadership at this pivotal moment,” said Ruel. “Advances in long-acting antiretrovirals, Cure research, and Tuberculosis treatment—combined with a renewed focus on real-world implementation—promise to transform health outcomes for children and families worldwide. I look forward to pursuing that goal with IMPAACT's remarkable team."
Dr. Ruel currently serves as Chair of the IMPAACT Therapeutics Scientific Committee, Protocol Co-Chair of IMPAACT 2053 and P1093, and Protocol Investigator for P1115 and IMPAACT 2028. Dr. Ruel is Professor of Pediatric Infectious Diseases and Chief of the Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at the University of California, San Francisco. He is Co-Chair of the NIH/DHHS Panel on Antiretroviral Therapy and Medical Management of Children with HIV and serves on the Pediatric Antiretroviral Working Group for the World Health Organization.
The Network Chairs have diligently and vigorously guided IMPAACT, and the appointment of Dr. Ruel will help the Network continue to innovate and advance our critical work. The Network looks forward to welcoming Dr. Ruel in his new role.
